Shopify login failing

A customer who can't log in shops like a stranger — or shops elsewhere.

Shopify runs the checkout rails, but customer accounts still fail in store-specific ways: activation emails that never land, the classic-vs-new accounts tangle, theme login forms quietly broken. The fixable parts are yours; we fix them.

What’s actually happening

Shopify's division of labor matters here: the platform owns core auth infrastructure (it's not down often, and when it is, their status page says so), while your store owns everything around it — which account system is enabled, how the theme renders login and account pages, what the notification emails say and whether they deliver, and any apps wrapping accounts in loyalty or portal features.

The modern confusion multiplier is Shopify's two account systems: classic accounts (passwords, activation emails) and new customer accounts (six-digit email codes, hosted pages). Stores mid-migration or misconfigured between them produce genuinely baffling customer experiences — password forms that reject everyone because passwords no longer exist, links pointing at the system that's turned off.

The usual causes, ranked

After twenty-seven years of these calls, the odds are well mapped. Start at the top.

01

Activation and code emails not arriving

The store-branded account emails dying in spam or transit — customers can't complete what they can't receive. Same delivery disease, Shopify edition.

02

Classic vs. new accounts misconfiguration

The two systems half-enabled or mid-migration — customers facing password prompts in a passwordless system, or vice versa.

03

Theme-level login breakage

Customized account templates and Liquid edits breaking forms, redirects, or the post-login return path. Yours to fix, and fixable.

04

An account-touching app misbehaving

Loyalty, wholesale, or portal apps intercepting the login flow — and dropping it after an update.

What you can safely try first

Nothing below can make things worse — that’s the selection criterion. Anything riskier belongs in professional hands, on a backup.

  1. 1

Create a fresh test account yourself

Sign up with an email you own, complete the full flow. Where it fails — email never arrives, code rejected, login succeeds then errors — names the segment.

  2. 2

Check which account system is enabled

Settings → Customer accounts: classic, new, or an inconsistent in-between. If what customers see doesn't match the setting, the theme is serving the wrong forms.

  3. 3

Check Shopify's status page — briefly

Rarely the answer, quickly ruled out. If platform auth is down, wait it out; everything else on this page is yours to fix.

Stop and call when…

  • Account emails aren't delivering — notification and delivery configuration needs real fixing
  • The theme's account templates were customized and the trail is cold
  • You're mid-migration between account systems and customers are caught in it

From there it’s our job: same-day look, flat quote, and the $229 flat repair covers most cases of exactly this.

Questions we hear a lot.

Isn't login Shopify's problem to fix?

The rails are theirs; the ride is yours. Platform-level auth outages are rare and brief — while theme templates, account-system configuration, notification delivery, and app conflicts (the usual culprits) are store-side, which means fixable today rather than waiting on a support queue.

Customers say the login code email never comes. Where does it die?

New customer accounts live and die by those code emails, and they fail like any store mail: spam filtering, delivery scrutiny, or customers' aggressive inbox rules. The diagnosis tests real inboxes across providers; the fix tightens delivery and the email content itself.

Should I switch to Shopify's new customer accounts?

Direction of travel says eventually, and the passwordless flow genuinely reduces forgot-password support — but stores with account-dependent apps or heavy template customization should migrate deliberately, not by toggle. We'll map what your setup depends on before anything flips.

Let your customers back into their own accounts.
