Shopify hidden from Google
Shopify built you a store. Nobody told Google where it is.
Shopify handles hosting, SSL, and structure — which lulls owners into assuming it handles being found. It doesn't. Stores stay invisible for platform-specific reasons: the launch password nobody removed, duplicate URLs diluting every product, and default pages Google reads as thin. All fixable, most quickly.
Same-day diagnosis. Flat quote before any fix.
What’s actually happening
The Shopify-specific blockers come first because they're binary. The password page — 'opening soon' — doesn't just block customers; it blocks Googlebot completely, and stores run months behind one because the owner browses logged-in and never sees it. Domain tangles are the other absolute: the myshopify.com address competing with (or canonicalizing away from) your real domain, splitting what little authority a young store has.
Past the binary blockers, Shopify's architecture creates dilution by default: the same product reachable at multiple collection paths, tag pages by the hundred, and near-empty template pages — all competing versions of yourself in Google's eyes. Add manufacturer-copied product descriptions (which thousand other stores also pasted) and the store isn't blocked at all; it's just indistinguishable. That's why 'not on Google' for Shopify splits into invisible (blockers) and unremarkable (dilution and thin content) — and the treatments differ completely.
The usual causes, ranked
After twenty-seven years of these calls, the odds are well mapped. Start at the top.
The password page, still on
Development mode outliving development. Total invisibility, invisible to the logged-in owner. Always the first check.
Domain and canonical tangles
myshopify.com vs custom domain misconfigured — authority split or aimed at the address you don't advertise.
Duplicate-path dilution
Products living at /products/ and every /collections/.../products/ path, tag archives multiplying — Google dividing attention across copies.
Manufacturer-boilerplate product pages
The same description as a thousand competitors — nothing to index that isn't already indexed elsewhere, from stores with more authority.
What you can safely try first
Nothing below can make things worse — that’s the selection criterion. Anything riskier belongs in professional hands, on a backup.
- 1
Open your store in a private window
Logged out, incognito. If a password page greets you, you've found it — months of invisibility, one checkbox.
- 2
Run site:yourdomain.com and site:yourstore.myshopify.com
The pair reveals both absence and the domain-split disease — indexed under the address customers never see.
- 3
Google your own product titles in quotes
Exact-match a description sentence. Pages of identical results from other stores is the boilerplate problem, measured.
Stop and call when…
- Canonical and domain repair means touching theme liquid and Shopify domain settings in the right order
- The duplicate-path cleanup requires judgment about which URLs live — pruning wrong loses what little you've earned
- Products need rewriting at scale — that's a content operation worth planning, not a checkbox
From there it’s our job: same-day look, flat quote, and the $229 flat repair covers most cases of exactly this.

Questions we hear a lot.
Doesn't Shopify do SEO automatically?
Shopify does structure automatically — clean URLs, sitemaps, mobile templates, fast hosting. What it can't automate: removing your password page, choosing your canonical domain deliberately, writing descriptions that exist nowhere else, and earning links. The platform hands you a well-built stage; being found is still the performance.
My store is on page one for our brand name but nothing else. Broken?
Not broken — early. Brand-name ranking means indexing works and blockers are gone; ranking for product and category searches is the competitive part that content depth and authority earn over time. That's the line between this $229 repair (blockers, structure, foundations) and ongoing SEO (the climb).
What does the flat fix cover for a Shopify store?
The blocker sweep (password, domains, canonicals), Search Console verified with the sitemap submitted, duplicate-path and tag-page cleanup, structured-data validation so products can earn rich results, and a prioritized rewrite list for your thinnest money pages. The store leaves findable — and with a map for becoming find-worthy.
