The answer shapes both the fix and the prevention.

The update wiped my customizations. Are they gone?
Often recoverable — from backups, from the database (customizer settings live there, not in theme files), or from cached copies. Then they go into a child theme so the next update can't repeat the trick. Whether your edits were file-level or customizer-level decides the odds, and we'll know quickly.
Can you fix a theme whose developer disappeared?
Usually yes — abandoned themes are just unmaintained code, and code can be patched. The honest question is for how long: each PHP and WordPress upgrade raises the patch cost. We'll fix today's break and give you the freeze/migrate/rebuild arithmetic for the fork ahead.
Should I just switch themes?
Switching is a redesign wearing repair clothes — content survives, but layouts, widgets, and design decisions don't transfer themselves. Sometimes it IS the right call; we'll tell you when, and what the migration actually involves, before you burn the current design down.
